Emma, the young heroine, wakes in an infirmary on the Moon with no memory of who she is or how she came to be there. She befriends a boy, James, who is in the same situation and together they explore the strange society they have found themselves in, where everyone is kindness itself, but no-one is fazed by their bizarre location, all happy to live under the protection of an unseen 'Moon King'.
